Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on OBS setup, YouTube API keys, polling quota, custom overlays, and community designs.

What is HypeTally?

HypeTally auto-tracks YouTube likes and channel members and shows them as live OBS browser-source overlays — a like counter and a member ticker you can drop into your stream scene.

How do I add it to OBS?

Open the dashboard, copy your Like Counter and Member Ticker URLs, then add each as an OBS Browser Source. Recommended sizes for built-in presets are shown next to those URLs in the dashboard.

Do I need a YouTube API key?

Yes. Add your own YouTube Data API v3 key in onboarding or the dashboard Connection tab. Open Google Cloud, enable YouTube Data API v3, then create an API key under Credentials. During key creation — before you finish — set API restrictions to Restrict key and select YouTube Data API v3. Paste the key into HypeTally. Keys stay on your profile and are never exposed in overlay URLs. The Connection tab includes a step-by-step guide with direct links.

What is quota-aware polling?

Per Google’s Quota Calculator, each project gets a 10,000 unit/day general pool plus a separate 100 calls/day search.list bucket (1 per call). HypeTally polling only uses the general pool: like polls cost 1 unit via videos.list. Member polls hit live chat, which isn’t listed in Google’s public cost table — the dashboard estimates ~5 units so runtime math stays conservative. Pause polling when offline to save the rest of the day.

How do custom overlays work?

Dashboard Overlays tab: copy the Claude prompts, paste the generated HTML, and save. Your same OBS URLs keep working. Toggle Custom On/Off without deleting saved HTML. To reset, clear both HTML fields and save.

What are community designs?

The /designs gallery is where streamers upload like counter and member ticker HTML. Others can apply a design to their dashboard. Templates should use {{ORIGIN}} and {{SLUG}} placeholders so URLs work for every creator.

How does pricing work?

Paid plans unlock live polling for OBS. Subscribe from the dashboard, manage or cancel anytime from the billing portal, and your overlay URLs keep working with the plan you choose.

Does it only work while I’m live?

Save your channel handle on the Connection tab. With polling on, likes and members only hit YouTube while you are live. When offline, auto-detect checks about every 10 minutes and resumes when you go live. Detect Live Stream still works anytime.

Can I change my like goal and poll speed?

Yes. In the Polling tab you can set like goal, target stream runtime, like poll interval, and member scroll seconds. The member poll interval auto-calculates from your likes interval.

Will my OBS URLs change if I switch designs?

No. /overlay/{slug}/likes and /overlay/{slug}/members stay the same. Switching built-in presets, custom HTML, or community designs only changes what those URLs render.

Does HypeTally follow YouTube’s API policies?

Yes. HypeTally uses YouTube API Services with your own API key to show official like counts and new-member events — we don’t invent substitute YouTube stats. Details are in our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, including links to the YouTube Terms of Service and Google Privacy Policy.
